The NAAFE 2021 Best Student Paper Award, sponsored by NOAA, recognizes the most outstanding paper by a current graduate student. Typically, this prize is awarded at the in-person NAAFE Forum and includes a travel stipend. In lieu of a travel stipend, this year’s winner will receive USD $750.
Students – Read below for eligibility, formatting, and submission requirements! Deadline is 1 December 2021.
Eligibility
To be eligible to compete for the NAAFE Best Student Paper Prize, you must:
- Be a student, from any country. “Student” is defined as currently enrolled in a graduate program, or having graduated no more than 24 months prior to the submission deadline.
- Be a current (2021-2023) NAAFE member. (Go here to become a NAAFE member.)

In order to ensure a fair and “blind” review, please send two separate pdf files as described below.
- One file must contain the title of the paper, including all authors’ names and affiliations including professional titles, complete mailing and email contacts, and the abstract. The filename should include the author’s first and last (surname/family) names (e.g. Kat.Goetting.pdf)
- A separate file must contain the paper title, abstract, and body of the paper, plus all references, graphs, etc. All mention of the authors’ names should be removed from this file. Name this file with just your last (surname/family) name (e.g. Goetting.pdf). (The NAAFE Executive Director (who is not on the Review Committee) will change the file name before submitting to the Review Committee to keep the review ‘blind’.)
- In addition to submitting your paper, you are required to submit an Attestation of Student Status by the deadline. Please note: no additional letter of reference is required; please do not send any. Your major professor or department chair must include the following language in the attestation letter, and sign and date the document:
I attest to the fact that {student’s name} is currently a student at {name of department and University}, or graduated within the last 24 months (state graduation date), and that {student’s name} is the primary author of the paper {title of paper}. "Primary author" means that {student’s name} is primarily responsible for the intellectual work in the paper, and that the paper reflects his/her own research, analysis, and writing.
